About Us

systemech, Inc was founded by David Grierson and Kevin Turner in 2011 in order to commercialize technology developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. systemech is focused on developing innovative and scalable manufacturing processes based on bonding and layer transfer. systemech has expertise in micro- and nanofabrication, with a particular emphasis on bonding and layer transfer techniques for fabricating advanced flexible electronics, photonics, MEMS, and semiconductor devices.

Dr. David Grierson, co-founder and CTO

David S. Grierson completed his Ph.D. in 2008 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) under the supervision of Prof. Robert Carpick and Prof. Pupa Gilbert, and was subsequently a postdoctoral associate with Prof. Kevin Turner in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UW-Madison.  David is an expert in AFM-based nanomechanics and nanotribology, scanning-probe-based nanometrology, and nanomembrane-based transfer processes. David has 15+ peer-reviewed journal publications in these areas. Dr. Grierson is chief technology officer and also manages day-to-day operations of the company.

Prof. Kevin Turner, co-founder

Kevin T. Turner is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Turner also holds a secondary appointment in Material Science and Engineering. He received his BS from the Johns Hopkins University and SM and PhD from MIT.  Prior to joining the University of Pennsylvania in 2011, he was on the faculty of the University Wisconsin-Madison. His primary research interests are related to mechanics, manufacturing, and materials for micro- and nano-scale systems.  His research spans multiple topics including, structured surfaces with tunable adhesion, interface mechanics across length scales, transfer/printing processes for manufacturing flexible and hybrid electronic devices, and additive manufacturing. Kevin has more than 140 technical publications. Kevin is an inventor of systemech’s core technology and provides technical guidance on specific projects within the company.
